The United Kingdom will require technology companies like Apple and Google to prevent children from taking, sharing, or viewing nude images on their cell phones and tablets. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy informed the House of Commons about this measure on Tuesday.
Nandy stated that the government will introduce a law "as soon as we can," but refused to set a specific timeline for implementation. The decision comes after a three-month deadline given by the government in June for Apple and Google, controlled by Alphabet, to voluntarily implement this type of measure.
Although both companies offer content protections for young users, neither comprehensively blocks the capture or sending of nude selfies. Lisa Nandy praised on Tuesday the implementation, by Apple, of age-based restrictions in its operating system.
