'Side profile': why the lateral profile became a trend on social media

For a long time, the relationship with one's own image was concentrated on mirrors and front-facing photographs. Social media, however, expanded the angles under which people see themselves. Videos, moving cameras and records made by other people brought the so-called side profile to the center of aesthetic discussions. On platforms, before and after comparisons, filters that simulate changes and content about nose, chin and jaw help draw attention to features that, until recently, might have gone unnoticed. The trend also popularized a broader view of the face: what seems to be an isolated issue may be related to the proportion between different regions. For facial surgeon Fernando Molina, the lateral evaluation needs to consider this relationship between the different parts of the face.
