Chega's motion of no confidence rejected with PS abstention

Notícias Lx8 September 2026 at 20:24

The motion of no confidence presented by Chega against the PSD/CDS-PP Government was rejected this Tuesday in the Assembly of the Republic. The initiative targeted the continuation of Luís Neves as Minister of Internal Administration.

The voting result was 104 votes against, 62 abstentions, and 60 votes in favor. The PS chose to abstain in the vote, contributing to the rejection of the motion.

Chega's motion of no confidence counted only on the favorable votes of the party that presented it, failing to obtain the necessary support to bring down the Executive.

Adelino Maltez: "Let's have several votes on motions of censure because maybe taxes will drop even more"

Political experts José Adelino Maltez and José Palmeira commented on the rejection of the motion of censure against the Government, considering that the Executive "came out tied" from the vote. Maltez criticized the prime minister's strategy of announcing IRS reductions up to the sixth bracket during the debate, suggesting ironically that more motions of censure should be held so that taxes continue to drop. Palmeira warned that political wear remains, although the Government may recover if it maintains the perception that there is no better alternative. Both agreed that Chega came out favored by the rejection, taking the opportunity to reinforce its political position.
