Painter Jorge Barroso inaugurated on September 8 the exhibition "Preto no Branco – Black in White" at the Gallery of the Florbela Espanca Cinema-Theatre, in Vila Viçosa. The show brings together 36 works that explore an artistic approach marked by the exclusive, or nearly exclusive, use of black and white tones, revealing a style that the artist developed throughout his career.
Native of Rio de Moinhos, Jorge Barroso dedicates approximately three decades to the arts, currently dividing his time between painting and writing. During the inauguration, the artist explained that through the contrast between light and shadow, he seeks to create volume, depth, and different interpretations in his works. The chiaroscuro work is one of the central elements of the exhibition, allowing for the exploration of the expressive possibilities of a limited palette.
The inauguration ceremony featured the presence of the Vice-President of the Municipal Council of Vila Viçosa, Tiago Salgueiro, who highlighted the return of the municipality's cultural dynamism after the vacation period. The local official valued the fact that Jorge Barroso is a true self-taught artist and highlighted the diversity and quality of the works presented, as well as the combination of painting and sculpture, which he considered results in fantastic works.
The exhibition can be visited until September 27, from Tuesday to Sunday, between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM and from 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. This is the first time Jorge Barroso exhibits in Vila Viçosa, bringing his work closer to the public of this Alentejo municipality.
