Chega will propose reduction of VAT on fuels and zero VAT on food

Jornal Económico8 September 2026 at 19:34

The president of Chega, André Ventura, announced on Tuesday that the party will present two bills next week: one to reduce VAT on fuels and another to set VAT to zero on the food basket. This statement was made at the end of the debate on the motion of censure that Chega presented against the Government.

The motion of censure was rejected, which led the 60 Chega MPs to stand up in the Plenary Chamber and repeatedly shout "resignation" against the maintenance of Luís Neves as Minister of Internal Administration. The MPs banged their hands on the benches during the shouts.

In response, the parliamentary groups of PSD and CDS-PP stood up to applaud the Government on their feet, while in the left-wing benches several MPs began to leave their seats. The President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, intervened after about half a minute of shouting.

Aguiar-Branco explained that he did not interrupt the session immediately because Chega wanted to show that democracy does not work. The president considered that the behavior of the Chega MPs "does not dignify Parliament" and stated that citizens will make their judgment in the next electoral act.
