The former German chancellor Angela Merkel publicly criticized the way the current CDU leader, Friedrich Merz, manages the so-called "sanitary cordon" against Alternative for Germany (AfD). Merkel considered that the CDU's current strategy focuses too much on a fixation on a single party.

Merkel clarified that she is not against the isolation of the far-right, but argued that the CDU should follow a different approach. According to the former chancellor, the party must "abandon this fixation on a single party" and tell its own story, instead of focusing exclusively on criticizing AfD.

Friedrich Merz, CDU leader, has been responsible for the conservative party's policy regarding the far-right. The "sanitary cordon" refers to the strategy of political isolation of AfD, a party that has been gaining ground in polls in Germany.
