Trump asked Putin to end the war in Ukraine and expressed interest in this "progress occurring during his presidential term," which ends in January 2029. The request was made in a phone call between the two leaders, according to information released by the White House.
In response, Putin said he has no "hostile plans" against Europe, in an attempt to reassure European allies in the face of growing concerns about the expansion of the conflict. The Russian president's statements come in a context of elevated tensions between Moscow and the West.
The phone call represents another diplomatic effort by Trump to mediate the conflict, which has been ongoing for more than two years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
