The Azores Government Council congratulated itself on the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the first regional executive in the history of Azorean autonomy. The inauguration ceremony took place on August 15, 1976.
The regional government paid tribute to Mota Amaral, who was the first president of the Regional Government of the Azores, as well as to the remaining members who were part of that executive. The regional governance publicly acknowledged the "historical contribution" of these governing officials to the construction of Azorean autonomy.
Mota Amaral, native to the island of Faial, became an essential figure in Azorean political history by leading the first regionally elected government after the April 25, 1974 revolution. This celebration marks half a century since the Azores took its first steps in its autonomous administrative organization.
