Romania's intelligence service (SRI) halted a sabotage operation coordinated by Russia on Romanian territory. A Russian citizen residing in the country had been under surveillance since February, as part of an investigation involving international partners, and the identified actions follow a pattern already observed in previous cases.
According to the SRI, the Russian citizen was instructed by an intermediary to produce photographic and video material of strategic military interest targets, including Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft. The investigation also revealed that the Russian Federation continues to use vulnerable category individuals to carry out these illegal activities.
In August, Germany was targeted by failed drone attacks with explosives at Leipzig airport. The autonomous system was also found near a Ukrainian Antonov aircraft. After investigating the incident, the German government officially attributed the attacks to Russia and announced a set of measures against Moscow.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, several European states have regularly attributed destabilization, espionage and sabotage operations to the Kremlin on their territories. Last week, the foreign ministers of Germany, France and Poland warned that they would respond to Russia's increased aggression against Europe. Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in sabotage operations in Europe.
