Court of Auditors gives "green light" to the State's purchase of 13.7% of REN

SIC Notícias8 September 2026 at 18:14

The Court of Auditors approved the acquisition of 13.7% of REN (Redes Energéticas Nacionais) by Parpública, thereby concluding the operation agreed with Pontegadea Inversiones. The decision allows the Portuguese State to proceed with the purchase of the stake in the energy sector company.

The operation was justified by the State on grounds of sovereignty and energy security. With this acquisition, the State becomes the second largest shareholder in REN, reinforcing its role in the national energy sector.

Pontegadea Inversiones, an infrastructure company, was the counterpart in the negotiation that enabled this State entry into the capital of REN, the company responsible for managing energy networks in Portugal.

Portugal joins United Kingdom and ten other countries that will ban trade with Israeli settlements

Portugal joined 11 other countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Ireland, in a coordinated sanctions action against illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, prohibiting the import of goods produced in these territories. The United Kingdom officially declared that the Israeli occupation in the West Bank is illegal under international law, with the British Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, accusing Israel of attempting "ethnic cleansing" against Palestinians. Israel responded by announcing the closure of the British consulate in Jerusalem and excluding the United Kingdom from the US-led mission to Gaza, with Minister Gideon Saar accusing the British of "scandalous lies". The joint statement from the 12 countries alerts to the deterioration of the situation in the West Bank, with unprecedented levels of settler violence and settlement expansion, calling on Israel to cease these practices. The sanctions also include restrictions on financing services for expansion, sanctions on violent individuals and review of weapons exports.
