Sergei Loznitsa: "Russia is like the USSR was, fear, poverty, colonialism"

Público8 September 2026 at 17:05

Director Sergei Loznitsa, known for the film "Imperium", traveled back to Russia, the country where he was born, formerly known as the USSR. During this trip, the filmmaker reflected on the current conditions of the country and its similarities to the former Soviet Union.

Loznitsa stated that current Russia is essentially the same as the USSR, characterized by three main elements: fear, poverty and colonialism. These are the distinctive marks that, according to the director, continue to define Russian society.

The director described the USSR as an impossible country, a political and social structure that was fundamentally based on the occupation and colonization of territories and peoples. This critical-historical analysis serves as the basis for his understanding of the continuity between the Soviet regime and contemporary Russia.
