Scams are increasingly difficult to detect, with SMS, emails and phone calls increasingly mimicking legitimate messages. The sophistication of the techniques used by fraudsters makes it increasingly complicated for consumers to distinguish authentic communications from deception attempts.
Many Portuguese people admit they cannot distinguish scams from legitimate communications. Almost a third of the Portuguese population claims to have little or no confidence in recognizing a fraud attempt, revealing a significant gap in consumers' protection capabilities.
This scenario raises concerns about the vulnerability of Portuguese consumers in the face of increasing fraud attempts, which continue to evolve and become more convincing.
