José Luís Carneiro states that PS abstention blocks political crisis

Diário de Aveiro8 September 2026 at 16:55

José Luís Carneiro, as PS leader, stated that the Socialist Party's abstention blocks a political crisis. This position arises in the context of broader political tension involving the party and the executive.

Regarding the Government, the PS general secretary considered that it follows "without direction," demonstrating strong criticism of the executive's political orientation.

Carneiro also criticized the executive for not having learned from the lesson of the vote on the Budget for 2026, suggesting that the Government did not draw adequate conclusions from that episode.

According to the socialist leader, the executive "went to deliver itself into the arms of Chega," in a reference to the relationship between the Government and the far-right party, indicating that the PS views this rapprochement as problematic.

Australia restricts social media giants' activity and threatens with new fines

Australia announced a new bill that imposes fines of approximately 70 million euros on social media giants that do not protect minors under 18 from harmful content, such as pornography, online harassment, content that glorifies criminality and encourages eating disorders. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese presented the legislation that creates a "duty of care" for operators and also requires the deactivation of recommendation algorithms. The law will be submitted to Parliament by the end of the year. This measure comes two years after the approval of the "Online Safety Amendment Act" and comes in a context where Australia was the first country in the world to ban social media for minors under 16, although this ban has been widely circumvented.
