AR/Censorship: Carneiro states that PS abstention blocks political crisis and criticizes Government

SAPO Notícias8 September 2026 at 16:07

The Minister of Internal Administration, José Luís Carneiro, stated that the abstention of the PS (Socialist Party) functions as a mechanism to block a political crisis. The position was taken at the opening of the debate on the motion of censorship against the Government presented by Chega.

Carneiro criticized the executive's posture, noting that the PS abstention strategy prevents the fall of the Government and, consequently, avoids an institutional crisis. The debate took place in parliament, where Chega's motion of censorship was discussed.

The minister considered that the current political situation demonstrates the instability of the system, but pointed to socialist abstention as a stabilizing factor. This position arises in the context of a motion presented by a right-wing opposition party.

The debate allowed José Luís Carneiro to defend his party's performance while criticizing the executive, reinforcing the narrative that the PS assumes a role of controlling governmental stability through its position in the Assembly of the Republic.
