Two PSP officers from Olhão, Jorge Sousa and Pedro Barbosa, began their trial at the Faro Court for aggravated kidnapping and qualified homicide of Aissa Ait Aissa, a Moroccan immigrant who died in March 2024 after allegedly being taken from the city in a patrol car and violently assaulted, dying approximately 20 days later at Faro Hospital. The officers denied responsibility, stating they took the two men home with their consent, leaving them in Pechão, and that the victim appeared to be intoxicated but was calm. A medical expert ruled out the possibility of being hit by a vehicle, concluding that death was caused by intentional assaults that caused a depression in the left side of the skull, possibly using an extendable baton. The Public Prosecutor's Office maintains that the officers abused their authority and acted consciously and freely, knowing they could cause death.
