Minister André Mendonça, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), provisionally removed on Tuesday the director-general of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues. The decision revives an episode in 2020 in which the STF also directly interfered in the choice of command of the corporation.
That year, Minister Alexandre de Moraes suspended the nomination of Alexandre Ramagem for the position of director-general of the PF. The suspension happened on the morning he would take office, after having been chosen by then president Jair Bolsonaro the previous day.
In the current case, Mendonça stated that the removal of Andrei is necessary so that STF ministers, the attorney general of the Union, Jorge Messias, and servers of the Federal Police can exercise their functions without illegal intimidation.
The minister declared he was targeted by illegal monitoring by the corporation, which motivated the decision to provisionally remove the PF director.
