We are not afraid of Chega, says José Luís Carneiro

Now8 September 2026 at 15:50

José Luís Carneiro, a member of the PS, stated that the Socialist Party "is not afraid" of Chega, rejecting any type of intimidation from André Ventura's party. The statement comes in the context of a broader political debate about freedom of expression and democratic responsibility.

The minister argued that it was the PS that fought through the streets of Portugal so that André Ventura could exercise his freedom of expression, even considering that he makes poor use of it. This position reflects the party's narrative about its historical role in defending freedoms in Portugal.

Carneiro also highlighted that the PS is responsible for strengthening the investigative means of the Judicial Police, thus underscoring the party's commitment to strengthening State institutions.

Furthermore, the official stated that the Public Prosecutor's Office itself has its origins in the PS, reinforcing the idea that the party has historically contributed to the construction of the institutional and legal framework that allows Portuguese democracy to function.

Chega questions: "Why was Luís Neves removed from Operation Influencer?"

Chega's leader, André Ventura, questioned in Parliament why current Minister of Internal Administration Luís Neves was removed from Operation Influencer, within the framework of the motion of censure presented by the party. Ventura addressed Minister José Luís Carneiro, questioning why the PS is silent and demanding explanations about the different treatment compared to other cases. Deputy Rita Matias reinforced the suspicions, questioning the normality of a reference criminal police body being removed from a process that led to the fall of a Government. Chega also announced it would propose a parliamentary inquiry committee into Operation Influencer to investigate acts of corruption in the last Executive of António Costa, although PSD and PS have already blocked this CPI from advancing. Operation Influencer investigates suspected crimes in the construction of a data center in Sines, in lithium exploration in Montalegre and Boticas, and in hydrogen production, having led to the fall of António Costa's Government in November 2023.
