This trend represents a significant reversal compared to previous years, when requests from Portuguese citizens to the United Kingdom had been increasing.
The areas of finance and IT lead the list of professions with the most work visas granted to Portuguese citizens. These are followed by veterinarians, nurses, and doctors, who complete the top five most sought-after professions.
This reduction occurs in a broader context of changes to British immigration policies, which have made the criteria for granting work visas more restrictive. The new rules implemented by the United Kingdom government include higher qualification requirements and minimum salary thresholds for candidates.
Experts point out that Brexit and its administrative consequences have contributed to making the labor immigration process more difficult for European citizens who wish to work in the United Kingdom.
