Artificial island to support offshore wind farms in Belgium receives one billion euros from EIB

SAPO Notícias8 September 2026 at 15:01

The European Investment Bank (EIB) will invest one billion euros in the construction of the world's first artificial energy island, which will be built on the Belgian coast. This infrastructure will function as a centralized electricity hub to connect offshore wind farms to the onshore electrical grid in Belgium.

The project represents a milestone in the European energy transition, by creating a platform that will allow multiple offshore wind farms to be connected at a single energy distribution point. The artificial island will function as a collection and distribution station for the electricity generated by wind turbines at sea.

Belgium thus emerges as a world pioneer in this innovative technology for renewable energy storage and distribution. The EIB's investment demonstrates European commitment to developing infrastructure that supports the expansion of offshore wind energy on the continent.
