5,000 professionals and 1,600 beds needed to combat epidemic in DRC

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1,600 hospital beds and more than 5,000 health professionals are needed to respond to the ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This United Nations agency announced these needs to address the outbreak affecting the country.

This is considered the second most severe ebola epidemic in history since the discovery of this disease in 1976. The magnitude of the outbreak requires human resources and hospital infrastructure on a large scale to control the spread of the disease.

WHO declared that, since May, the epidemic constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. This classification raised the global alert on the need for a coordinated response to combat ebola in the region.
