Maria Graff, who in 2004 was the director of Cultural Affairs at the Vienna Chamber, publicly advocated that Madeira should use the exile of Charles I of Austria as a tourism promotion opportunity for the region.
The Austrian official's statements came following the beatification of the last Austrian emperor, held on October 3, in Rome, an event she considered to be an excellent opportunity to introduce Madeira to the international market.
O DIÁRIO reported this position in its September 8 edition, highlighting Maria Graff's understanding of the potential that the theme could represent for Madeiran tourism.
