Niterói has gone nine years without electronic traffic monitoring on municipal roads. The speed cameras stopped working in 2017, after the contract with the company that provided the service ended. In 2020, NitTrans reported that it was preparing a new bidding process to hire equipment, but monitoring was never resumed. Now, the city government states that the use of electronic equipment is under study again, without providing a timeline for implementation.
Professor Levi Salvi, from the transportation sector of the Civil Engineering Department at UFF, argues that increased monitoring is necessary given the frequency of violations committed on the city's streets. According to him, among the most common violations are running red lights and speeding. The professor states that one way to improve the behavior of road users is by increasing monitoring.
