Ex-mayor of Famalicão received more than 570 thousand euros in contracts since leaving the City Hall

SAPO Notícias8 September 2026 at 09:31

Durval Tiago Ferreira, former vice-president and councilor of the Vila Nova de Famalicão City Council, received ten adjudications from the municipality for legal services since leaving his municipal position. The total amount received exceeds 570 thousand euros.

The former councilor continued to provide legal services to the municipality even after leaving his position as vice-president and councilor at the city hall. These adjudications were made directly by the Famalicão municipality.

The case arises in a context of debate about the accumulation of former politicians in public offices and the awarding of contracts to entities where they previously held positions. Portuguese legislation establishes rules on incompatibilities and impediments for former members of the municipal executive.

The municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, led by the PSD, had not commented on the situation at the time of publication. The opposition may demand explanations regarding the criteria used for contracting the former councilor's legal services.

PISA: Ministry of Education aims to reverse declining trend by 2029

The Portuguese Ministry of Education expressed "concern" over the PISA 2025 results, which reveal a historic decline in learning among 15-year-old Portuguese students. Portugal scored 462 points in Reading, 460 in Mathematics, and ranks 29th in Science, 26th in Reading, and 30th in Mathematics, with results below those recorded in 2000 and 2003. The Secretary of State for Education, Alexandre Homem Cristo, took responsibility for finding solutions by 2029, while ruling out a direct link to the current Government's results. Among the ongoing measures, investment in primary school libraries, reading fluency diagnostics, and training in reading pedagogy stand out. The official pointed to the Covid-19 pandemic and concentration difficulties as explanatory factors, advocating for greater pedagogical diversity through curriculum review.
