The Arctic is facing profound changes due to rising temperatures, which includes the emergence of new river systems. Scientists from Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, in Canada, were analyzing the flow of rivers in the Canadian High Arctic when they encountered data that made no sense according to existing theories.
The researchers started from an established premise: permanently frozen soil, known as permafrost, acts as a barrier that prevents erosion. The belief was that the ice within the soil functioned as a natural glue, keeping sediments locked in place and limiting the impact of moving water.
However, the records analyzed contradicted this theory, leaving the scientists perplexed. The team was confronted with data suggesting that Arctic rivers were eroding in unexpected ways, violating what were considered fundamental rules of fluvial erosion in the frozen environment of the Arctic.
