Red Eléctrica clings to factory shutdowns as a security 'shield': orders in two months as many disconnections as in the previous four years

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General8 September 2026 at 06:04

Red Eléctrica de España is intensively using the electricity system protection mechanism that allows stopping large industrial factories to rapidly reduce electricity consumption and avoid imbalances throughout the system. Since mid-July, it has had to resort to this protection "shield" almost as many times as in the previous four years combined. This mechanism, created for emergency situations, is being activated with unprecedented frequency. Since it came into operation in September 2022, the system operator had used this tool only seven times. In just over a month and a half, the group has used it another six times, almost matching the number of activations from the entire previous period. The situation reflects the growing pressure on the Spanish electricity system, which faces significant challenges in balancing energy supply and demand.

"Rigorous expenditure control" and "prioritization of measures": Sarmento's Plan B to control public accounts

About a month away from the submission of the State Budget proposal for 2027, the Ministry of Finance, led by Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, maintains the forecast of a null budget balance for 2026, although it does not exclude the possibility of a slight deficit due to the international context, namely the economic impact of the war in Iran. The Government guarantees that, if necessary, it will not resort to generalized tax increases or indiscriminate cuts to public services, opting instead for "rigorous expenditure control" and "prioritization of measures with the greatest economic and social impact". The forecasts are validated by the IMF and the OECD, with slight variations between the projections of the Bank of Portugal, the European Commission, and the Public Finance Council. On September 23rd, Statistics Portugal releases the second quarter data, which may confirm or correct the scenario being prepared.

Gas prices heat up and industry impact already worries. But it's from 100 euros that alarms sound

Natural gas prices in Europe are rising to levels not seen since 2023, with the TTF benchmark contract exceeding 73 dollars per unit, driven by storage levels lower than expected and the war in Iran. Analysts warn that, although current prices are penalizing for industry and may worsen inflation, it is the 100 euros per megawatt-hour threshold that represents the true economic concern threshold. European reserves are significantly below last year's levels, increasing pressure on bloc countries, although no supply disruption is anticipated. Asian competition for LNG cargoes and geopolitical volatility are making forecasts difficult, with institutions such as Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Aurora Energy Research differing in their estimates for the coming months.

CIP to rent former Ministry of Economy headquarters. Horta Seca transfer ruled out

The Portuguese Business Confederation (CIP) is negotiating the rental of the Palácio do Manteigueiro, the former headquarters of the Ministry of Economy in Chiado, Lisbon, to install its headquarters and a professional training academy there. The process, which officially began more than a year after a letter sent to the Minister of Infrastructure, has been marked by some controversy, as it was initially presented by the Economy minister as a transfer, but the Ministry of Infrastructure stated it was unaware of any formal proposal. The confirmation that it is a rental was made by the CIP president, Armindo Monteiro, who stated he was awaiting the rent determination process.
