Study reveals that approximately 2.7 billion people worldwide are passive smokers

CNN Portugal8 September 2026 at 06:06

A study revealed that approximately 2.7 billion people worldwide are passive smokers, that is, they are exposed to tobacco smoke without being smokers themselves.

Passive smokers are exposed to two types of smoke. The first type is that which emanates from the lit end of tobacco products, which is released during the combustion process.

The second type of smoke to which passive smokers are exposed is that which is exhaled directly by smokers when they consume tobacco products.

This exposure to tobacco smoke represents a risk to the health of people who do not smoke but who live with smokers or frequent spaces where smoking occurs.

"This can't be right". The Arctic rivers are breaking the rules of erosion

Canadian scientists from Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia discovered that rivers in the High Arctic are violating the traditional rules of fluvial erosion. The researchers assumed that permanently frozen soil (permafrost) acts as a "glue" that prevents erosion, keeping sediments in place. However, the collected data shows the opposite: with rising temperatures and the "awakening" of the Arctic, more fluvial systems are emerging and the erosive processes are behaving in unexpected ways, challenging established scientific models.
