China accelerates exports with strong demand for automobiles and technological goods

Euronews Portugal8 September 2026 at 05:29

Chinese exports accelerated in August, registering 25% growth compared to the same period last year. This increase represents a significant acceleration in China's international sales pace.

The growth was mainly driven by the automobile sector and high-tech products. These two sectors were the main contributors to the positive performance of Chinese exports during this period.

The numbers reflect strong international demand for Chinese manufactured goods, particularly in higher value-added categories. The automobile sector has been gaining market share globally, while technological products continue to be highly sought after.

The Commerzbank purchase leaves UniCredit with a Russian legacy of lawsuits, convictions and assets trapped in Moscow

The UniCredit acquisition of Commerzbank, after more than two years of legal proceedings, brings with it a complex Russian heritage composed of litigation, convictions and assets trapped in Moscow. The five-story, pastel pink building was once the former headquarters of the German bank's operations in Russia and the rest of Eurasia. This remained the case until spring 2024, when a St. Petersburg court froze the assets and shares of Commerzbank's Russian subsidiary as part of a sentence of almost 100 million euros.

The 'boom' of student residences runs out of projects despite record demand

The student housing industry faces a paradox: although demand for university accommodation outside the city of origin is at historic highs and many new beds have been opened in a short period, the pipeline of new projects is shrinking. The sector has entered a phase where it delivers faster than it replenishes, precisely when demand reaches unprecedented levels.

Red Eléctrica clings to factory shutdowns as a security 'shield': orders in two months as many disconnections as in the previous four years

Red Eléctrica de España (REE), the Spanish electricity system operator, has been resorting with unprecedented frequency in recent months to the protection mechanism that allows disconnecting factories from large industry to rapidly reduce electricity consumption and avoid imbalances in the grid. Since mid-July, the mechanism has been activated six times in just over a month and a half, almost the same number of times as in the previous four years since its implementation in September 2022, when it was used only on seven occasions. This security 'shield' is being used intensively to guarantee the stability of the electrical system in the face of growing pressure on the grid.

Brazil's import restrictions don't affect pastries

The Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Affairs clarified that the restrictions on imports of animal origin products from Brazil will not affect plant-based food products that contain small amounts of animal origin ingredients, such as pastries. On September 3, the ban on imports of Brazilian animal origin products came into force in the European Union, including beef, poultry, tripe, eggs and honey. This measure does not cover food products of mainly plant composition.
