U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio began on Tuesday a visit to three South American countries — Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru — with the goal of reinforcing the pro-Trump alliance in the region. The trip takes place in a context of new rightward shifts in Latin America and the advancement of the expansionist doctrine espoused by President Donald Trump.
The visit's agenda includes armed actions against drug trafficking, economic support from Washington, and discussions about Chinese presence in the region. The three chosen countries are strategic allies where Trumpism has managed to establish significant positions.
The trip also serves as a vehicle for indirect messages to governments that do not belong to the pro-Trump orbit, such as is the case with Brazil. The Brazilian government is not included in the visit, suggesting a strategy of diplomatic isolation.
