The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, asked this Monday that the United States be held accountable for the death of 23 migrants who died in North American custody since the beginning of the year. Turk made this appeal at the opening of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, which is taking place in Geneva. According to Turk, four of these deaths occurred in the custody of US immigration authorities since June alone, which significantly worsened the toll. The High Commissioner emphasized the urgent need for accountability for these deaths, reinforcing the UN's appeal for Washington to take responsibility for the treatment of migrants detained at its borders and facilities.
