Brussels proposes rules to regulate short-term accommodation and ease housing pressure in the EU

The European Commission will present on Wednesday a proposal for common rules to regulate short-term accommodation, such as Airbnb-type platforms, in the European Union. The objective is to allow Member States and local authorities to intervene in areas that are under housing pressure. The proposal comes in a context of growing concern about the impact of this type of accommodation on the European real estate market, particularly in cities where housing supply for residents has decreased. With these rules, Brussels intends to give local authorities tools to balance tourism with the need for housing for citizens.
