Education Minister admits two thousand vacancies unfilled, but assures there are teachers available

Expresso7 September 2026 at 19:35

More than two thousand positions remain unfilled in Portuguese schools, according to Education Minister Fernando Alexandre. This situation represents a significant deficit of teaching staff in various institutions across the country.

Fernando Alexandre assured, however, that there are teachers available in the system to meet the needs identified in schools. The minister acknowledged the existence of a problem in the distribution of teachers across schools, although he guaranteed that there is no shortage of professionals.

The minister stated that a more precise assessment of the situation will only be possible at the end of the week, when another teacher placement contest will take place. This contest should allow filling a significant part of the vacancies currently unfilled.

The situation arises in a context of recurring difficulties in the Portuguese education system regarding human resources, where the unequal distribution of teachers across different regions of the country has been a constant concern for educational authorities.

The new Quaest research this Monday reveals a challenging political scenario for President Lula (PT) in the 2024 electoral race. The survey shows Lula in the lead with 36%, followed by Bolsonaro (PL) with 29%, but columnist Vera Magalhães classifies the electorate's movement as "very negative" for the president, highlighting the negative fluctuation in government approval and the crisis at the STF involving messages between banker Daniel Vorcaro and Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The scenario also records 8% white/null votes, 8% for Augusto Cury, and 10% undecided, with Vera warning about concerning data even with Lula's numerical lead.
