Australian journalist Anna Funder gave a Zoom interview in which she analyzes the weight of the past on the eastern half of Germany. Funder studied in West Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall and later deeply investigated the legacy of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR).

According to Funder, Germans from the former GDR feel drawn to far-right ideology because they feel wronged. This phenomenon is reflected in election results, as seen on Sunday in Saxony-Anhalt, where the AfD party has been achieving growing results.

Funder's book, Stasiland, originally published in 2003 and now available in a new Portuguese edition by publisher Corvo-Marinho, thus gains renewed relevance. The work precisely addresses the legacy of the former GDR and its consequences for contemporary German society.

The Zoom interview with the Australian journalist comes in this context of growing popularity of the far-right in East Germany, where the past of East Germany continues to influence the current political behavior of the population.
