The Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, considered 'unfair' the accusation that the State is profiting from fuels. The minister responded to criticism pointing to an increase in tax revenue with the rise in prices.
The government official recalled that, since February 26th, the revenue collected from the VAT increase on fuels was used to offset the Fuel Tax (ISP), totaling 700 million euros.
With this measure, the Executive intended to partially compensate consumers for the price increase, channeling the additional tax revenue to reduce the total tax burden on fuels.
The minister's position comes at a time when various political and social voices question the impact of taxes on the final price of fuels paid by Portuguese consumers.
