Santa Cruz accuses Government of "underinvestment" and announces 240 homes

SAPO Notícias7 September 2026 at 20:14

The municipality of Santa Cruz accused the Regional Government of "underinvestment" in housing and announced a plan to build 240 housing units. The council responded this way to criticism made by Miguel Albuquerque, president of the Regional Government of Madeira, about the housing situation in the municipality.

Miguel Albuquerque had criticized the municipal management of Santa Cruz regarding housing, questioning the municipality's capacity to solve the problems of its residents. The president of the regional executive pointed out deficiencies in the response given to the housing needs of the local population.

In response, the municipal council recalled that it inherited a significant debt from the previous executive, which was led by the PSD, the party of Miguel Albuquerque himself. This reference aims to demonstrate that the financial difficulties the municipality currently faces have their origins in previous administrations.

The announcement of the 240 housing units comes as part of a broader plan to meet the housing needs of the population of Santa Cruz. The council justifies the accusation of underinvestment with the lack of financial support from the Regional Government for housing projects in the municipality.
