The Azores will join a European project dedicated to combating the Asian hornet, an invasive alien species that represents a threat to the ecosystem and to the beekeeping activity of the region.
The initiative is part of the European Invasive Alien Species Rapid-Response Fund, a European fund created to respond quickly and coordinated to invasive species spreading across the continent.
The main objective of the project is to strengthen the regional response capacity to this invasive species, strengthening the mechanisms for detection, monitoring, and control of the Asian hornet in the Azores.
The project will have an expected duration until August 2027, during which measures and strategies will be implemented to mitigate the impact of the Asian hornet in the archipelago.
