German churches express concern over AfD regional victory

dnoticias.pt7 September 2026 at 19:48

German Churches expressed concern over the victory of the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Sunday's regional elections in the eastern federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, although without an absolute majority. The bishops and religious leaders acknowledged the democratic result, but made clear their discomfort with the strength achieved by the party.

In a joint statement, the Churches stated that they "acknowledge that the AfD has become the strongest party in Saxony-Anhalt by a clear margin." The document signed by the President of the German Bishops' Conference (DBK) acknowledges that the "worst fears have been confirmed," but emphasizes the need to accept the election result.

The far-right party achieved its best result ever in a regional election, consolidating its position as a significant political force in Eastern Germany. This victory occurs in a context of growing popularity of anti-immigration parties in various regions of the country.

The Churches' concern reflects a broader apprehension within German society regarding the rise of far-right parties in the national political landscape. The country's major religious denominations have been regularly warning about the dangers of extremism and intolerance.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, cancelled a high-level defense working group that was set to be launched today and included former Portuguese minister João Gomes Cravinho, after several member states considered the initiative untimely. The group was to be led by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and composed of former leaders such as France's Florence Parly, Britain's Ben Wallace, Ukraine's Andriy Zagorodnyuk, and Estonia's Juri Luik. The objective was to address gaps in Europe's conventional military capabilities and evaluate the response to Russian hybrid attacks. The cancellation comes at a time when the effectiveness of the European External Action Service and the High Representative position is being questioned, with France and Germany proposing a strengthening of the role's powers.
