The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, cancelled a high-level defense working group that was set to be launched today and included former Portuguese minister João Gomes Cravinho, after several member states considered the initiative untimely. The group was to be led by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and composed of former leaders such as France's Florence Parly, Britain's Ben Wallace, Ukraine's Andriy Zagorodnyuk, and Estonia's Juri Luik. The objective was to address gaps in Europe's conventional military capabilities and evaluate the response to Russian hybrid attacks. The cancellation comes at a time when the effectiveness of the European External Action Service and the High Representative position is being questioned, with France and Germany proposing a strengthening of the role's powers.
