Back-to-school campaign alerts to pedestrian collision risks at 50km/hour

Diário de Viseu7 September 2026 at 19:15

The National Road Safety Authority launched today an awareness campaign directed towards the back-to-school period, with the objective of alerting the population to the risks of road pedestrian collisions. The campaign specifically aims to raise awareness among drivers and pedestrians about the danger of high speeds in urban areas and near educational establishments.

The main alert of the campaign emphasizes that the probability of a pedestrian collision at 50 kilometers per hour resulting in fatal consequences for the pedestrian reaches 90%. This statistic aims to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of reducing speed, especially in areas where there is a greater presence of children and young people.

The initiative comes at the beginning of the school year, a period in which there is a significant increase in pedestrian traffic near schools. The campaign calls for prudence from all road users, both drivers and pedestrians, to adopt safer behaviors during this period.
