Greenland: von der Leyen responds to Trump with 200 million euro investment

Euronews Portugal7 September 2026 at 19:11

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced a 200 million euro investment package for Greenland, in a direct response to the pressure exerted by former US President Donald Trump, who has threatened to annex the island.

Von der Leyen publicly defended Greenland's territorial integrity, expressing the European Union's support for the Danish autonomous territory. This position comes at a time when Trump has reiterated his intention to acquire the island, which has abundant mineral resources.

The European investment aims to strengthen economic and political ties with Greenland, demonstrating the European Union's commitment to maintaining the territory's sovereignty. The island, although autonomously governed, remains under Denmark's sovereignty.

The tension between the United States and Europe regarding Greenland highlights a significant geopolitical dispute, with Trump pressing for annexation while the EU responds with greater economic integration.
