Sardine catches in the Barlavento algarve region are almost doubling compared to the same period last year. According to the Barlavento Fishermen's Cooperative, which represents 14 vessels, fishermen are bringing almost double the amount of sardines to shore. This increase has been accompanied by strong demand since the start of the season in May.
Sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to the normal functioning of the heart, as well as providing high biological value protein with all essential amino acids. The fish also contains phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and vitamin D, the latter associated with the functioning of the immune system and the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus.
The greater availability of sardines did not cause the price paid to fishermen to fall. Demand has increased in recent months, allowing the rise in catches to be accompanied by better prices. On particularly favorable days, the kilo can exceed two euros at the fish auction, although this is the value at the dock and not the final price for the consumer.
Algarve fishermen consider there is room to maintain the catch at least until November, depending on how the activity evolves. The end of the season is tied to the annual limit established for the Portuguese fleet, of 33,446 tonnes, and when that volume is reached, the season ends regardless of the professionals' expectations.
