The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) plans to investigate the prices charged by digital media and communication service providers, such as Netflix and WhatsApp, owned by Meta, according to information from the Business Day newspaper, from Johannesburg.
The investigation will assess the cost of the so-called over-the-top (OTT) services for South African consumers, as announced by the regulatory authority.
Additionally, ICASA will also launch a separate investigation into the costs of traditional telecommunications services, which could affect major companies in the sector such as MTN Group, Vodacom Group, Telkom and Cell C.
The announcement of the investigations was made by the Business Day newspaper from Johannesburg, which did not specify a date for the start of the regulatory proceedings.
