The Évora Court of Appeal convicted a 32-year-old man to two and a half years of suspended imprisonment and payment of 5,000 euros in compensation to the victim, for the crime of domestic violence. The decision came following an appeal against a previous sentence.
The man had initially been acquitted of the crime of domestic violence, but the Public Prosecutor's Office appealed the decision. The Évora Court of Appeal re-examined the case and reached a different conclusion from that of the first instance court.
With this conviction, the defendant will serve a suspended sentence, meaning he will not go to prison provided he complies with the conditions imposed by the justice system. Furthermore, he will have to compensate the woman with 5,000 euros for the damages caused.
