Only one in five app-based motorcyclists has social security coverage, IBGE indicates

Brazil has approximately 405 thousand people who work as app-based motorcyclists, including passenger transport services and food and product delivery. Of these workers, only 79 thousand have social security coverage, representing 19.4% of the total, equivalent to one in five app motorcyclists.

The data was released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) through a special module on work through digital platforms of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad), released last Friday (4).

For comparison purposes, when considering all employed persons in the Brazilian private sector, the social security coverage rate is 62.4%. When considering all motorcyclists in the country, regardless of whether they work with digital platforms or not, the coverage rate rises to 31%.
