Study field weighs more than type of institution in labor market entry

A study by Edulog on the labor market outcomes of Portuguese higher education graduates concluded that the study field is more determinant than the type of institution (university or polytechnic, public or private) to avoid unemployment and secure quality employment. The research analyzed graduates from 2016/17 and 2020/21 and revealed that fields such as Arts, Psychology and Natural Sciences present lower probability of unemployment than Engineering, while ICT and Engineering guarantee better salaries and professional satisfaction. The study also identified overqualification problems in Humanities, Services and Arts, and warned about the worsening situation of young graduates, with the percentage without disadvantages falling from 14.1% to 7.8%. Women continue to face lower salaries and higher risk of overqualification.
