ADN defends personal assistance for students with disabilities in Higher Education

dnoticias.pt7 September 2026 at 14:40

The ADN party defends that the Regional Government of Madeira should adapt to the region the Independent Living Support Model (MAVI), which already includes personal assistance for attending Higher Education. The measure aims to guarantee support for students with disabilities in access and permanence in university education.

The party considers that this personal assistance must have public funding and individual assessment of each case. The proposed model also provides for coordination between the Institute of Social Security of Madeira and the University of Madeira to guarantee the adequate implementation of this support.

ADN underlines that the objective is not to transfer to families the cost of the indispensable support that these students need. The party understands that the support must be structured in a way to guarantee that students with disabilities have effective conditions to attend higher education.

ADN's position emphasizes that entering university is not enough if the student does not have the necessary support to follow academic activities. The party argues that the adaptation of MAVI to the region constitutes a way to guarantee the effective inclusion of these students in higher education.
