There are more students but insufficient teachers. Meet the portrait of education in Portugal

SAPO Notícias7 September 2026 at 11:50

The Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, through the Pordata platform, created a portrait of the Portuguese educational system based on the most recent official data available. The report covers the entire school journey, from preschool to higher education.

The data reveal a structural problem in the system: Portugal registers an increase in the number of students, but the number of teachers does not keep pace with this growth, resulting in an insufficient number of teachers in relation to demand.

The Pordata document allows for the analysis of trends and challenges in education in Portugal, highlighting imbalances between the school population and the human resources available for teaching.

This portrait comes at a time when the discussion about the quality and responsiveness of the Portuguese educational system remains current, with implications for national education policy.
