Russia ordered the closure of the German consulate in Saint Petersburg, in an escalation of diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The measure was announced in response to a similar decision made by Germany.
Germany had previously closed the Russian consulate general in Bonn. This closure came as a reaction to the discovery of a drone with explosives at Leipzig airport, which German authorities associated with Russian activities.
The order to close the consulate in Saint Petersburg represents a new chapter in the deteriorating bilateral relations between Russia and Germany, which had already been experiencing diplomatic conflicts in recent times.
