The Algarve Orchestra will live accompany Buster Keaton's film "The General," scene by scene. The event takes place on September 12 at 7pm at the Auditório Municipal in Olhão, under the direction of Pablo Urbina. This is not the first time the Orchestra has combined music and cinema, with a similar initiative occurring in July at the Teatro de Palha in Aljezur, under the direction of Martim Sousa Tavares.
"The General" is described by the Algarve Orchestra as Buster Keaton's most ambitious work, made without regard to cost. The film follows the true story of the chase aboard the locomotive "General" during the American Civil War, with a score by Andrew Simpson. Upon its theatrical release, the critical response was merciless and the performance fell far short of expectations, which cost Keaton his total creative freedom, pushing him into a more restrictive contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
The event is part of the APOS cycle — Classical Music in the Territory — and the cultural programming of the bicentennial of the Olhão City Council (1826-2026). Tickets can be purchased through Ticketline.
