"We made history": German far-right celebrates historic victory in Saxony-Anhalt elections

Now7 September 2026 at 11:16

The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved a historic victory in the regional elections of Saxony-Anhalt, winning more than 43.8% of the vote according to preliminary results. This result represents a milestone for the party, which celebrated the occasion with the phrase "We made history".

Despite the expressive result, the AfD did not achieve the absolute majority needed to govern alone, which means it will not be able to form a government without reaching agreements with other parties.

Saxony-Anhalt is a German federal state located in the eastern region of the country, where far-right parties have been registering particularly high results in recent elections.

The party publicly celebrated this result as a significant achievement, underscoring the importance of the moment for the AfD's political trajectory in Germany.
