Nuno Cardoso, former mayor of Porto (1961-2026), has died

Nuno Cardoso, former mayor of Porto City Council, died this morning at the age of 64, after a prolonged illness.

The engineer by profession led the portuense municipality between 1999 and 2001, as a replacement for socialist Fernando Gomes, who at the time left to become Minister of Internal Administration in António Guterres' Executive.

A graduate of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, where he was currently a guest assistant professor in the Computer Engineering department, Nuno Cardoso ran as an independent in the 2013 local elections, which elected Rui Moreira for the first time, and also ran in the latest local election race, won by Pedro Duarte in October 2025.
